The Alicante County Council promotes the olive oil sector through the creation of the Olive Resources Centre and the high quality brand ‘Olis d’Alacant’

19/04/2010 - Alicante (Spain)

Within the framework of the 3rd Steering Committee of the INNOVATE MED project, the Local Promotion and Developement Area of Alicante presented the  CRRO cluster  (Olive Resources Center of the County of Alicante). This cluster, which will start functioning shortly, will be in charge of  identifying the problems concerning the olive oil sector and giving possible solutions to improve its current situation. Besides, it will be responsible for  disseminating and promoting at an international level the Alicante olive oil brand “Olis d’Alacant”, considered as a high quality product. This brand intends to act as an umbrella for the promotion of the olive oil produced in 30 inland municipalities of Alicante.

The president of the Alicante County Council, José Joaquín Ripoll, acknowledged the efforts made by the County in the promotion of the olive oil, and pointed out that the commercialisation of olive oil from Alicante has made a step forward in quality, as it has passed from being sold by liter to a bottling sale.

The announcement of the creation of the CRRO cluster was followed  by the  presentation of the book  ‘The olive, the oil and the olive oil mills in the Alicante County’, based on the farming of the traditional oil, as well as by a visit to a Mediterranean olive oil mill.

In this line, Ripoll announced the setting up of a new action plan in order for the olive oil from Alicante to get its own Protected Designation of Origin (PDO).
